Holon Maths Academy

Summary

A digital learning experience designed to make mathematics more approachable

Holon Math Academy is an educational platform designed for students to learn mathematics, explore topics, assess their knowledge and track their progress.

The product combines a public-facing academy website with a personalised student dashboard and assessment experience. The goal was to create an environment where learning mathematics feels structured and approachable rather than intimidating.

I designed the experience from the initial discovery journey through to the authenticated product, including the website, pricing, onboarding, dashboard, test catalogue, test details, assessment states and completion experience.

Problem statement

Making mathematics easier to approach, navigate and measure

Mathematics presents a particular UX challenge: the subject itself can already feel demanding before a student even begins interacting with the learning platform.

Research supports this concern. OECD data has consistently associated mathematics anxiety with lower mathematics performance, while PISA 2022 found that mathematics anxiety remains widespread among students. The OECD also reports that students with stronger mathematical self-efficacy tend to be more proactive and motivated in their learning.

For Holon Math Academy, this meant the product could not simply present lessons and tests. The interface itself needed to reduce unnecessary friction around learning.

The challenge was therefore to design a digital environment that could:

  • make mathematics topics easy to discover;

  • communicate the purpose of each assessment clearly;

  • give students confidence before starting a test;

  • make progress understandable at a glance;

  • provide meaningful feedback after assessment; and

  • create a consistent journey from discovering the academy to completing a test.

The experience needed to feel educational without feeling intimidating, structured without feeling complicated, and engaging without becoming distracting.

[ 01 ] Holon Math Academy Student Dashboard

The Dashboard

Turning progress into something students can understand

The dashboard acts as the student's central learning hub.

At the top, the interface immediately establishes personalisation:

Welcome, Stanley 👋

Below this, the interface brings together several pieces of information:

  • action items;

  • total test score;

  • average test score;

  • best topic;

  • recommended topics;

  • learning content.

The dashboard was designed around progressive prioritisation.

Important actions appear first, performance information is made visually scannable, and recommended topics are presented underneath as opportunities for continued learning.

Making performance visible

The dashboard uses circular score indicators to represent test performance.

Instead of forcing students to interpret several numbers independently, the visual indicators provide an immediate sense of performance.

This is particularly relevant in an educational context: students need to understand not only what their score is, but also whether they are progressing.

The design therefore treats performance as something that should be seen, not simply read.

Recommendations

Helping students decide what to learn next

The dashboard includes recommended mathematics topics such as:

  • Trigonometry

  • Calculus

  • Algebra 1

  • Linear Algebra

Each topic is presented as a self-contained card with supporting information and a clear action.

This creates a natural continuation from assessment to learning:

Performance → Recommendation → Further learning

The dashboard therefore becomes more than a reporting page. It becomes a learning-navigation tool.

Before The Test

Giving students context before commitment

Selecting a test opens a detailed side panel rather than forcing the student onto an entirely new page.

For example, selecting Algebra 1 reveals:

  • what the test assesses;

  • why the test is relevant;

  • description;

  • duration;

  • soft-skill information;

  • test author.

It covers a range of topics, including solving equations, graphing linear functions, and working with inequalities. The test includes a variety of question types, such as multiple-choice, true/false, and problem-solving. It is intended for students who have completed a basic algebra course or are currently enrolled in one. The test is designed to be challenging but fair, and it will provide you with valuable feedback on your strengths and weaknesses in algebra. By taking this test, you can identify areas where you need to improve and focus your studies accordingly. The test is also a great way to prepare for standardized tests, such as the SAT or ACT. So, if you're ready to put your algebra skills to the test, sign up today and see how you do!

The test is divided into several sections, each covering a different topic. The first section covers solving equations, including linear equations, quadratic equations, and systems of equations. The second section covers graphing linear functions, including slope-intercept form, point-slope form, and standard form. The third section covers inequalities, including linear inequalities, compound inequalities, and absolute value inequalities. The fourth section covers word problems, which require you to apply your algebra skills to real-world scenarios. The test is timed, so you'll need to work quickly and efficiently. However, don't worry if you don't finish all the questions. Just do your best and try to answer as many questions as possible. Good luck!

Why the side panel?

The side panel was an intentional UX decision.

Instead of:

Test catalogue → New page → Test information → Back

the experience becomes:

Test catalogue → Test details → Start

This reduces unnecessary navigation and allows the student to make an informed decision before beginning the assessment.

It also demonstrates an important principle in the product:

The Assessment

Designing a focused testing environment

Once a student starts a test, the interface becomes deliberately focused.

The surrounding application becomes secondary while the question and answer choices become the primary interaction.

This follows a broader principle from multimedia-learning research: unnecessary information and confusing layouts can add extraneous cognitive processing, so instructional interfaces benefit from reducing distractions and clearly signalling relevant information.

For an assessment product, that principle is particularly relevant.

The student should be thinking about:

The question

—not:

How do I use this interface?

Designing for interruption

What happens when a student wants to leave?

A good assessment experience cannot only account for the ideal journey.

Students can accidentally click away, change their minds or decide to stop temporarily.

I therefore designed an explicit Quit Test confirmation state.

Are you sure you want to quit the test.

You can still continue from where you stopped, you won’t lose anything.

Cancel

Proceed

The modal communicates the consequence of leaving and reassures the student that they can continue from where they stopped.

This creates a deliberate moment of confirmation before potentially losing the current assessment state.

When the assessment is completed, the experience changes from task execution to feedback.

Impact

Creating a more connected learning experience

Holon Math Academy transformed the learning journey from a collection of educational pages into a connected digital experience—from discovering the academy and selecting a plan to taking assessments and understanding performance.

The design created impact across three key areas:

A clearer learning journey
Students can move naturally from exploring mathematics topics to selecting a test, reviewing its details, completing the assessment and continuing to their results.

Reduced cognitive friction
Complex information such as test duration, number of questions, difficulty level and completion status is presented in a structured, scannable format, allowing students to make decisions without navigating through unnecessary screens.

A scalable product foundation
A reusable visual and component system established consistency across the marketing website, dashboard and assessment experience, creating a foundation that could support additional topics, tests and future product features.

The result was an experience designed not just to help students take tests, but to help them understand where they are, what they have achieved and what they can do next.

From discovery to assessment, every interaction was designed to make learning feel clearer, more approachable and easier to navigate.

Conclusion

Designing for confidence, not just completion

Holon Math Academy taught me that designing an EdTech product is about more than presenting educational content effectively. It is about understanding the moments of uncertainty that exist throughout a student's journey and using design to make those moments easier.

From the first interaction on the website to the final assessment state, I focused on creating a consistent experience where students always have context and a clear next step.

The project also strengthened my approach to dashboard design, assessment UX, information hierarchy, interaction states and scalable design systems.

Most importantly, it reinforced a principle I carry into my product design work:

Good educational design should make the product easier to understand, so the learner can focus on learning.

Holon Math Academy was therefore not simply a website redesign. It was an exploration of how UX, visual design and product thinking can work together to create a more approachable digital learning experience.
